When You Need to Hear the Good News Before the Bad News

There must be  an antenna  in my house …connected to a  friend of mine.  It’s uncanny !  We don’t call or e-mail regularly.  She’s not even on Facebook to see my daily status updates!  There’s no scheduled contact time and  we live states away from each other but it never ceases to amaze me how she seems to just “know” when we  need prayer over here !  Amazing !

It happened again just last Friday morning … I was quietly reading, drinking my coffee  when her “innocent” little text came in — “Prayer needs?” .  How does she know these things ???  I responded , “Going to the doc today for recheck on my thyroid nodules.  Think I might be growing a new one 😦  Pray for me about that …”

Back  story here — I tend to grow things  — not just in my garden but in my body as well.   Ironically, they’ve been compared to fruits or vegetables in size … but not in popularity.  Once my body grew a “cantaloupe-sized” cyst on my ovary and, yes, that was quite an ordeal  to  remove !  Then there’s the “pea-sized”  nodule / goiter on my thyroid that’s been poked and prodded with a very long needle only to find it’s not really cancer or anything so let’s just leave it alone unless it obstructs something !

Last Friday was one of those normal rechecks on the thyroid thing, however;   a few weeks ago I had noticed another nodule possibly mounding up.  Usually, it’s  my nature to get very anxious and go through all the “what if’s” and “how to’s” and basically  end with planning my funeral, complete with outfit and music!  Today was different.

Literally, as I was responding to my friend’s text,  which I’m assuming was prompted by the Holy Spirit  in the first place , the Holy Spirit spoke something into my heart as well ...”Do you not know?  Have you not heard?”  What?  I know that phrase!  Then the next phrase came on the heels of that one … “Underneath are the Everlasting Arms”.

Grabbing my Bible (and http://www.biblegateway.com, of course) , I began searching for these phrases — knowing God was speaking something specifically into my  current situation.

Do you not know?
    Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary,
and his understanding no one can fathom.

Isaiah 40:28 (NIV)

It was as if the Holy Spirit was saying …”Uh …don’t you know?  haven’t you heard?  I’ve already taken care of that!  Didn’t you get the memo!?  I’m the Lord — the Everlasting God — Creator of the ends of the earth !  And no matter what happens, underneath are My Everlasting Arms and  I’ll carry you all the way through!”

The eternal God is your refuge,
and underneath are the everlasting arms.
He will drive out your enemies before you,
    saying, ‘Destroy them!’

from Deuteronomy 33 (NIV)

God was actually giving me the  good news BEFORE the bad news!  The good news is that He’s taken care of everything already and He’ll hold me together through whatever journey I have to go on whether it’s  thyroid nodules or anything else that pops up in life !  I went to the doctor that day resting in this peace the Holy Spirit had already given me.

The bad news …sure enough, there’s a new nodule in thyroid town and I’m on a journey to have it tested and prodded and poked and possibly removed.  God had already given me a good recommendation of a specialist in town weeks before this came up and I wouldn’t be surprised if He hasn’t already mapped out the people and specific details  needed for this journey ahead.

I’m pretty sure someone reading this has had some “bad news” lately and I wanted you know there’s  “good news” as well.

Jesus said , “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5, NIV)

And this morning, God also reminded me ...”I know you by name …My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” (from Exodus 33, NIV)

My heart is at rest.  The Creator of the universe — the Everlasting God — The Great I AM — knows me by name!  He knows YOU by name too and  He’s   holding us in His Everlasting Arms.  He’s already gone into the future and lovingly  mapped things out for us and that, my friend … is GOOD NEWS for everybody !

How  can  I pray for you?  We walk together — holding on to this  truth from our Father God!  Whatever happens …He’ll never leave us or abandon us !

Whatever may pass, and whatever lies before me
Let me be singing when the evening comes

Bless the Lord, O my soul
O my soul
Worship His holy name
Sing like never before
O my soul
I’ll worship Your holy name

(Words and music by Matt Redman “10,000 Reasons”)

  1. Just like G-d to give you a heads up. I know He’s been doing that for me and I appreciate it. Reminding me before the bad news comes that He’s got my back!!! Or in your case – your throat!!! Love you!
